This site is a source for anyone who is interested in the culture associated with the Gypsies, or the Rom as they are more correctly called. The Gypsies arrived in Europe during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. They were descended from an ancient warrior class from India. They migrated through Persia (Iran), Armenia and eventually to Europe. Today, there are over 10 million Gypsies in Europe, mainly in Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Spain. Their dark coppery skin and black hair, and exotic clothing led people to believe that they were from Egypt, and were called “Gyptians” and eventually Gypsies, but they call themselves the "Rom".
Over the centuries they have had an important influence on the cultures of through which they have passed. They stand as a symbol of freedom and independence .
